Decide how many feet of the 60-ft length go to the shop. Every 10 ft of shop is 400 sq ft that no longer counts as living space — and usually costs far less per foot to finish.

A 40-ft width can usually clear-span in steel or post-frame, keeping the interior free of posts. Your structure type decides how flexible interior walls can be.

A 14–16 ft eave height makes room for a loft or vaulted great room. Taller walls cost more but can add hundreds of usable square feet.

The 60-ft sides get the most daylight. Plan bedroom egress windows and great-room glass before the kit is ordered — adding openings later in steel is expensive.

Porches are low-cost square footage that makes a barndo feel like a home. 10–12 ft deep porches are usable; 6 ft porches mostly just shade the wall.

Reserve a real room for HVAC, water heater and — on acreage — the well pressure tank and filtration, instead of squeezing them into a closet.
